The Cavapoo is an energetic dog. Although they enjoy going to the park, playing with other dogs, swimming in rivers and canals, and going on hikes, their short legs can quickly tire.
It is important to keep your Cavapoo physically active, but their age, health, and abilities will determine whether can cavapoos go hiking. Adult Cavapoos can cover big distances if they have the strength and stamina.
We explain more here.
How long can Cavapoo hike?
Due to their short legs, Cavapoos have to hike a lot, which can potentially result in them burning themselves out if they do so regularly.
How long is too long when it comes to walking your Cavapoo?
Caavapoo dogs need moderate amounts of exercise, which should be spread out throughout the week. As well as giving them the freedom to run, explore and let off energy, they should also be given adequate time to rest, relax and recover. Because walking your dog involves balance and ability.
Your Cavapoo will love exploring the great outdoors with you as long as they have been trained over time to hike long distances and at a comfortable pace. You cannot expect your Cavapoo to cover great distances right away, but this is a gradual process.
Initially, Cavapoo puppies should only be taken for short hikes (no longer than 5 minutes at a time). As they gain confidence and age, you can gradually increase their distances and durations.
If a Cavapoo dog is over 11 years old, it can still hike great distances, but at a much slower pace, depending on its health condition. If your elderly dog suffers from joint pain and arthritis, you should be careful where, when, and for how long you walk him.
Can Cavapoos hike, is that possible?
Our Cavapoo Rosie and I were on the fence about whether she would be suitable for a hiking vacation later this year, so we were particularly interested in this question.
If your dog is new to hiking, then it is a good idea to start with a variety of shorter walks on different terrains before jumping right in with a long-distance trek. The same as with humans, dogs need time to gain strength and stamina to safely ramble with you – especially when the ground is uneven.
Before setting off, make sure the route is dog-friendly. This will help you find out where to let your dog off the leash and if there are any potential hazards such as livestock, roads, or steep hills.
If you are planning to do something that is out of the ordinary with your Cavapoo, such as climbing a mountain, it is also a good idea to consult your vet, as they can provide advice on parasite protection – particularly if you plan to take them somewhere prone to ticks, fleas or mosquitoes.
In light of the fact that our Cavapoo is used to hiking long distances, and provided we give her plenty of rest days, we have decided to take Rosie along with us on our hiking adventure.
The benefits of haking a Cavapoo
Hiking can offer a plethora of health benefits for both canines and humans, including a great way to clear your head and get some fresh air.
All dogs can benefit from hiking, including:
- Exercise can help you control your weight – obesity has been linked to osteoarthritis, cardiovascular disease, liver disease, and insulin resistance. It is estimated that 50% of dogs are overweight or obese in the United States.
- It promotes mobility and improves the overall function of joints.
- Your dog will benefit from routine hikes because they regulate the digestive tract, prevent urine infections, and help them empty their bowels.
- Stops destructive behavior – Your dog may chew, bark, and urinate in the house if it is not sufficiently stimulated during the day.
Dog owners can benefit from hiking in the following ways:
- A good form of exercise to combat obesity is hiking, with studies promoting dog hiking as one of the best ways to do so. In 2020, America’s obesity rate stood at 42.4 percent, while the UK’s rate was not far behind at around 30%.
- Reduces blood pressure
- With constant repetition and movement, bones and muscles become stronger and toned over time.
- In addition to reducing stress, hiking is a therapeutic activity, so it stands to reason that having a dog with you – and their joyful enthusiasm and desire for fun – enhances the experience.
What are the benefits of other exercises and training?
In spite of the fact that dog walking and hiking are great ways to exercise and can be a great source of fun, you may occasionally not be able to get outside for a long stroll and have to settle for a quick whizz around the block.
For your Cavapoo, it is important to combine different exercises such as tugs-of-war, fetch, free play, and even swimming.
As well as keeping them off their claws, playing with dog toys will keep them from becoming bored with the same routine.
It is also great for your dog to do agility exercises. In addition to building muscle strength, it allows you to teach your dog how to walk on different types of terrain, such as balance bars, so he can prepare for longer walks. The experience of conquering an agility course together helps them bond, and running through tunnels helps them cope better with enclosed spaces.
What do I need to hike my Cavapoo?
You should ensure that you are adequately prepared with all your dog hiking essentials, regardless of where or how far you will hike your dog.
The best dog leash is one that is durable and strong and will allow your dog freedom of movement while enabling you to keep your dog closely under your control. Depending on the type of hiking you intend to do, you may even require more than one type. However, regardless of whether you choose nylon or leather, standard or retractable, you must make sure the product fits your dogs correctly and is functional. Our recent reviews can help you choose the best retractable leash for a Cavapoo.
Despite the fact that not everyone wants to use a harness for their dog, we find a harness to be the most convenient option for our Cavapoo. Besides being easy to clip on and off, Rosie’s neon coloring makes finding her easily when she sneaks off into the woods easy. You can also use a harness with a handle while hiking since it makes it easy to lift your dog over obstacles or into and out of cars.
You should always have a bag filled with healthy treats at the ready when exercising your dog, whether you use them for energy, bribery, or as a reward. On the market, there are many snacks for your dog to choose from, but we like nudges the best, or rather Rosie does!
Dog water bottle
While exercising, keeping hydrated is extremely important for both us and our dogs. Even though most dogs would happily drink from a muddy puddle or lake, it is possible that they contain bacteria and toxins. That’s why it’s so important to have fresh water on hand for your dog. We use this lightweight and convenient water bottle when we’re out and about because it’s compact, doesn’t leak, and can be reused if any water remains.
Dog Poop bags
I think we all know the saying ‘what goes in, must come out, which means we responsible dog owners have to deal with the doggy poo. The Earth-Rated Dog Poop bags have a lovely lavender scent to mask any strong odors, and I literally keep them stuffed in every coat pocket and in every purse I own. I personally recommend them for the strength they provide and the lovely lavender scent they mask.
First Aid Kit for Dogs
First aid kits for pets can either be bought or made yourself. It is important to have:
- Solution of saline
- An antibiotic ointment
- Tweezers on a multi-tool
- Tool for removing ticks
- Swabs of cotton
- Powder for clotting blood.
What is the maximum number of walks a Cavapoo can take per day?
How often you walk your Cavapoo really depends on its age and fitness, just like how far it can walk.
In addition to two walks of around 30 minutes in total per day, a fully grown adult Cavapoo may prefer one walk a day or a couple of longer walks a week with one day off in between for some owners.
Our family is a family of walkers, (in fact, that’s why we got a dog), and we regularly take our Cavapoo Rosie for a 6-mile hike 2-3 times a week. While we work during the weekdays, she is able to curl up in our office and get some much-needed R&R, which she adores.
As a result, Cavapoos require a minimum of around 20-30 minutes of exercise every day in order to stay healthy physically and mentally. This can be provided by a combination of both indoor and backyard play, as well as walks outdoors.
Generally, Cavapoo puppies should be active several times a day, with 5 minutes of walking for every month of age.
For a Cavapoo puppy, this means:
- Three Months Old = 15 Minutes (Twice a day)
- Six Months Old = 30 Minutes (Twice a day)
- Nine Months Old = 45 Minutes (Twice a day)

What is the best time to take my Cavapoo puppy for its first walk?
It is safe for Cavapoo puppies to walk outside once they have had their last set of shots and vaccinations. However, most veterinarians will ask you to wait another week or two after the last injection to ensure that the immunizations are effective.
Meanwhile, we recommend practicing walking in your backyard with your Cavapoo puppy on the leash so they can become accustomed to the feeling of being led.
Your Cavapoo will be ready for short walks once they have been given the all-clear. As your dog’s age will limit where you can take them, we recommend staying local so that they can become familiar with the sights and smells around you.
Despite the fact that dogs love exercise, they have trouble letting us know when they are tired. However, when their joints are still growing, it is important not to overdo it and cause premature arthritis.
It’s important to exercise your dog every day to gradually build up strength and endurance so that your dog’s exercise routine can eventually become longer.
Cavapoo backpack for carrying your Cavapoo
There is a good chance that you will put all the things we mentioned in a backpack, but don’t forget to leave some space for your small dog too. He may get so tired that he will be unable to walk.
There may be times when he needs a longer break and you simply do not have enough time to give him one. In that case, he should be carried in a backpack.
